Everyone is expected to put their head down and work. If you overachieve, you will only get minimal verbal praise, but no real compensation or promotion acknowledgement. It does not matter how you perform, you will get promoted by paying your dues with time. This is why many of the senior management lacks the motivation, skills, and knowledge to mentor their team. The head of the department is so focused on her job that she doesn't take the time to know who is truly contributing to the team. Those who play the political game and brown nose will be able to move up more quickly. The executives do not acknowledge this, but there is also complete bias towards those who are Chinese speakers over those who are not. There is so little diversity because anyone who does not fit the culture will eventually leave.
