management is utterly lost and rampant nepotism is in the company

As a fresh College graduate entering the work field, I was beyond excited to be working in the field of engineering. Ideally, I thought Norfolk Southern would be an amazing place to work, but I was totally wrong. It was a nightmare. I was hired as a Management trainee, and later promoted to Assistant track supervisor, in the maintenance of way department. Coming into the position I “thought” I would be doing more construction management based task via the job description but I was wrong. My daily task had little to no substance compared to what I was skilled at and learned while I was in school. If you aren’t inspired to use your brain and would rather physically work than mentally, this is the job for you. Most of your daily task will be Labor due to the company short handed on Laborers. As a female who had no experience with the railroad prior, I was definitely disappointed in the company I chose. Plus the Long excruciating hours, on call 24/7, and out of date system and processes contributed to my dislike. The company is extremely behind when It comes to diversity and inclusion as well. As a female working in this industry, I was constantly challenged daily by employees as if I wasn’t good enough to work for the company. Employees would laugh if I didn’t know a tool or how to use it instead of showing me. There aren’t many females working in this department and many of the laboer workers have never had a Female supervisor. I’ve experienced everything from sexual harassment to discrimination and racism from not employees but the town I was moved to by the company. Overall, Norfolk Southern would be a great company to work if there wasn’t such a strong disconnect between the field and cooperate and also if they really took employees opinions into consideration. Good luck if you’re seriously considering working for this company. It is definitely an eye opening experience.
