Pros

A lot of opportunities to Network. Lot of good people who will want to help you throughout your time at the company. Potential to make a lot of money if you're willing to relocate to wherever they need you, whenever they need you. Pretty good benefits. A lot of vacation weeks.

Cons

Pay looks good on paper, but they don't mention that you will be working 72-84 hours a week. Often working 14+ days of 12-hour shifts without a day off. Terminal Superintendents will take away your off-days as punishment for things out of your hands. Schedule constantly changing, unrealistic expectations of officer coverage. Absolutely no work-life balance. Absolutely no job security, you will come into work worried everyday that it will be the day you get fired over something stupid. MICROMANAGEMENT - be prepared to never be able to make your own decision, and if you do be prepared to have it picked apart and get in trouble somehow for it. Be ready to be interrogated anytime you make a decision. If you go into supervision, upper management will force you to write up your employees for any and everything to look good on paper. You will be nagged about the number of write-ups you have that month, even when you have reached your monthly quota. Your success is largely based on how many employees you can write up per month. I don't understand why this company is so set on firing employees when manpower is already a huge issue.

Pros

Pay and retirement That's about it

Cons

It used to be an Okay job when I first started 7 years ago but it keeps getting worse and worse. You always have to look over your shoulder. The bosses are what makes the job miserable. They are always trying to bust you for stupid stuff and will litteraly hide and spy on you while you work. The bosses do not know anything about anything it seems like yet they are in charge of a mechanical department and dont even know what a wrench is(I am not exagerating). They will bust you for stupid things like not putting your emergency brake on your truck when you park it and will go out of there way to try and bust you. That's just one example of many. It seems like They do anything in there power to make it miserable for the employees. They took away our bonuses that we used to get every year of $1000 but they will always brag about the company making record profits every year/quarter. They change jobs around all the time and have been changing jobs with weekends off to days off in the middle of the week for no reason other then to make the employees mad. If the bosses don't like you they will keep abolishing your job until you finally bump on a job that you dont like. You are always being harrast especially when you actually do your job the way your supposed to meaning a full fra inspection and you will really be harrast and have a target on your back (like I have) if you shop cars and find defects like your supposed to do according to federal regulations. For example: I was pulled into the office for taking to long on my freight car inspections and was threatend to be reprimanded if I do not work faster so I started to work my cars faster until I got reprimanded for missing a defect on a car that FRA found so now I am back to doing my original thorough inspection and now I am being hurrast again for taking to long and findimg to many defects. Let me remind you that if the FRA(federal railroad administratoin) inspects my cars after I do and finds defects I will be reprimanded for missing it like I was before. You can't win. And this isnt just how they treat me this is how they treat everyone. That is why everone has been quiting and the bosses can't seem to figure out why. The only reason I am still there is because I am getting $32 an hour and it is hard to find a job to match that but trust me I'm trying!
