Enjoy the work itself but not too keen on the lifestyle of unpredictability.

Pros

Conductor: Good pay, great health care plan, good retirement/pension plan + 401K (30% match of up to 6%). The work is not too strenuous. Don't interact with management very often.

Cons

Obviously, the hours. Takes 5-8 years to get to a seniority position which allows you to have an assigned shift and not be on call 24/7. Your paycheck is dependent on everything - from politics to the season to the weather. Work like gangbusters for three weeks then get called for two shifts in the week following. Now laid-off. When you do interact with management, it's usually not a positive exchange.

Pros

Great pay and benefits, once you are finished training Lots of opportunities to advance due to retirements

Cons

-Management is inconsistent in their expectations -You will never EVER hear you have done a good job, but you will catch hell any time you make a mistake -Punishments for mistakes are inconsistent, what gets one person fired, will get another a slap on the wrist - Training pay is only $120/day, barely enough to live on - EVERYTHING is based on seniority, regardless of ability to perform your job - it is a 24/7 operation, you will work holidays/weekends/nights - There is a very old school mentality, there is very little to no respect for younger employees
