Pros

Comradery of workmates. Variety of work. Work structure. Benefits such as paid leave, 401K, and retirement. Some leaders promote growth. Training programs available. Tuition waiver for 2 classes a year (used to be 3 but budget cuts eliminated 1).

Cons

Inconsistency of the application of policy & procedures within departments. Ex. Flex time allowed for some and not for others. Work from home allowed for some and not others. Benefit costs now paid, deductibles high. Lack of on campus clinics and medical facilities. Pay - Faculty get raises and additional payments for doing little things outside of their regular duties. Other employees go the extra mile and get no additional pay and often times little recognition. Work environment - varies by college and even department. I have worked in areas that the people worked as a team and other areas where the entire agenda seemed to be stabbing people in the back. No merit system. When raises are given, everyone gets the same raised. The annual reviews are meaningless in that they do not give a good worker a better raise. Recognition systems - Leader of the Pack and Awards for Excellence are based upon politics - everyone in the Dean's offices are nominated every year and usually someone from that area wins.
