Pros

The work environment is quite good, professors are free to pursue their own interests. Work hours for faculty are flexible. The department has good administrative support.

Cons

The benefits package is not very competitive. Salary raises depend strongly on the state economy. Student enrollments in graduate level courses are insane -- 80 to 100 students per section are nit unusual. Often, raises and other benefits are not based strictly on merit.

Pros

The higher education environment is a wonderful thing to be part of. There are lots of opportunities for training and learning if you seek them out. The department you work in is what determines how your experience here will be.

Cons

State employee benefits are not that great, I was surprised that benefits weren't better. If you are a SPA employee, you are seen as not important. I say that even though I'm EPA. Some of the long-term employees are at a point where they need to retire and let the culture change.
