Pros

HFS middle management in Tempe is helpful, and seems to care about employees. The people in the Tempe office in general are very nice and good to work with. Office is decently nice, easy to get to from the east valley. Benefits are decent, 4% pension that fully vests after 3 years. 401k with 3% match that vests over 6 years. Tempe office is growing especially within HFS, which means a lot of opportunity for personal growth.

Cons

The broader company doesn't seem to care about employees. Simple things aren't available to employees (coffee). If you want a standing desk because your legs hurt after sitting for hours on end going above and beyond in your job, no chance... The target bonus amount they mention is a totally fictitious number, even tops performers will get no where close to that amount, expect half of that at best. No real incentive to perform well, as far as raises or bonuses go.

Pros

Plenty of opportunities, the Tempe office is growing fast. One of the few companies in the greater Phoenix area that give employees exposure to an industry that is dominated by the traditional financial centers, ie NY, Chicago, LA.

Cons

Some roles require working CST hours at least some of the time.

Pros

-Northern is a place where you can gain experience in the financial industry -Front office roles in banking and investment management at Northern Trust can stack up with most other banks -The company has a distinguished history and is respected in the industry -You could potentially work abroad -Good Chicago loop location -Investment operations work can lead to an external investment consulting analyst or wealth management job after a couple of years, if you keep learn about markets and investing while at Northern and present your experience the right way

Cons

-Low pay, raises of 1% or less for everyone I worked with regardless of performance -Low morale, jaded employees are the norm -Lack of professional middle managers, my manager and assistant manager were demeaning bullies who did little work and managed with passive-aggressive emails -Most managers in my department had open cases filed against them with HR for harassment but with no action taken -High turnover -Scant, informal training for many employees -Little career direction or support -Investment operations (which is most of the organization) work is dry at best -Sausage factory: severe, assembly line environment
