Pros

If you want the ability to work hard to gain control of your future and your success, you can build your own business within the Northwestern Mutual framework. Over the years you will be compensated extremely well, have freedom with your work and time and have the resources to achieve your desired lifestyle. You will always be proud of your company, Northwestern Mutual, and its ethical standards.

Cons

Ironically, a self-directed person must be willing to take direction and hit specific targets to start the career. If you have the work ethic to do this and you want to help people succeed in their lives, no matter what circumstances they might incur, follow the development plan and you will build a business you can control, without being ever being micromanaged. But it isn't easy, unless you start from the beginning to build good work habits.

Pros

Superior benefits from an ethical company. Outstanding financial position with a very strong conservative business model. Supportive management with an emphasis on career planning. Upper management is very open with the direction of the corporation. There is a lot of support and job security working in the corporate home office.

Cons

Salary is average (but made up for with the benefits). The organization is currently top-heavy, which makes long-term career planning a bit cloudy for those looking to move upwards. The high level of job security sometimes leads to complacency for a small portion of the employees.

Pros

NM is a company where people truly care about doing the right thing, from the top of the organization on down. Because we are not publicly held and are owned by the policyowners, we have the ability to make decisions for the long term. That affects how we use capital, how we develop employees, how we make day-to-day business decisions. I wouldn't own insurance from anyone else, and I wouldn't want to work anywhere else (though I have). NM will be around for the next 150 years and I'm proud to be a part of it.

Cons

Career movement can be a little slow, and sometimes the consensus-oriented decisionmaking can be frustrating. Our desire to do the right thing means that sometimes we take a long time deciding what to do. But having seen the alternative at other companies (who shoot from the hip and then are out of business), it's a small price to pay.
