horribly run company with decent people

Pros

If you want to show up and just collect a paycheck and go home it is a great place. Good benefits. The people you work with are mostly good people and easy to get along with, but also incompetent, which is a result of decades of mismanagement.

Cons

Not a good place if you care about your career or the purpose of the business. They constantly say customer first, but horrible products and services that are more expensive than the free options. Management is well paid and most of them are just trying to extract as much value out of the company as they can. I've heard numerous VERY senior level execs answer questions with "i dont worry about (xyz industry headwind)...i'll be long gone before that happens." There is a reason why the organization has gotten some bad press. There is zero culture and the town halls are a joke. You will hear a bunch of crap about 'big data' 'AI' 'machine learning'....none of these people even know what this stuff is and have nowhere near the competency to utilize these technologies.

Pros

Stable asset base and long history create some security for employees and can support longer-term strategic thinking by management, but competitive pressures are taking a toll. Solid position within industry if good choices are made and right culture is sustained.

Cons

Constant churn at executive level results in a lack of focus and strategic direction. It’s not as easy as it should be for talented people to move around within the organization, as middle managers are worried about looking good and retaining budget/headcount in a cost-cutting environment instead of what’s best for employee careers and the organization as a whole.
