Not suited for experienced engineers

Pros

For the most part engineers are of high quality, although you will find incompetance there as well.

Cons

As an engineer you will be overlooked. You will never be asked to have an opinion, and your manager will agree to things behind your back and then make you do the job he agreed to, despite your advice to the contrary. Managers see themselves as leaders and decisions makers and engineers are there just to push the buttons. Don't be foolish and think you will be able to influence anyone with giving feedback. Peakon and team health checks are used exclusively to figure out who to paint a target on and try and get them to leave. I've seen far more engineers leave Ocado than I have seen joining. In my one-to-ones all I was listening from my managers was what THEY (or "The bussines") expect from me, how THEY expect me to do my job, what THEY expect me to focus on and how THEY expect me to complete THEIR tasks and all of my input was brushed to the side. If I give a comparison with my current employment, I have a manager in his late twenties and when I talk to him it's always about what I would like to see, how I see the business progressing, what I think we should be doing and how THEY can help ME do my job better. That's what leaders do. They shut up and listen, make you feel safe that you can always contribute and enable you to do your job. In Ocado you simply aren't valued. Fact! I can only describe the culture in Ocado as NASTY, but they can afford it since COVID has decimated other bussiness' and made their's boom, but what does that say about the comany?

Thanks for taking the time to review Ocado Group. We have made a note of your feedback and ensure it gets seen by the relevant team. We would like to point out that we have listened to several areas of feedback about management and are rolling out a new software that will enable employees to leave anonymous feedback without concerns of comments going straight to the manager. We would also like to point out that each employee is entitled to regular meetings with their line manager to discuss their role and opportunities for growth. This is also the time to discuss any concerns that you may be having. Unfortunately it seems that these weren't expressed in this situation, so we will take your comments onboard to see how we can improve on this front and prevent this issue moving forwards. Thanks for all your hard work during your time with us. Katie

Pros

The company have regular opportunities to provide feedback directly to senior management. People are friendly. Canteen is ok, but not subsidised enough.

Cons

You will be suffocated by the demand to meet their values and will be able to get a job elsewhere for 10 - 40% more with much, much less hassle. The values detract away from your ability to become a better engineer and there is very limited scope for promotion beyond a certain level. The feature work is pretty dull most of the time and they are incredibly inefficient with getting work done, but they're convinced that throwing more people at the problem is the solution. Actually, they need less, but in tighter teams with more autonomy.

Thanks for your feedback. We truly believe that our values differentiate us as an employer by helping individuals to grow and develop, and helping our teams to work together effectively for the best results. We are sad to hear that this wasn't your experience, we will consider this feedback moving forward.
