Pros

Projects were engaging, challenging, and directly relevant to the firm. By the end of the summer, intern projects were used by the traders. Expectations for performance are high, but everyone at the firm has personal standards that exceed those, creating an environment where each employee pushes themselves to surpass expectations. Many, many opportunities for personal and professional development, limited only by the intern's desire to pursue those opportunities.

Cons

Standard trading work hours; longer than most other jobs but on par with other trading hours. Internship is not regimented like some banks and other shops; it depends on what needs to be done and other factors. If you can handle a fast paced, changing environment, that won't be a problem. If you can't handle that, perhaps trading isn't for you after all. Conversely, most pressure comes from each individual employee on themselves. Anyone who relies on constant reminders and pressure to perform would likely not do well at OMC.

Pros

The firm is growing very quickly, and if you are a strong employee then you have infinite opportunities and upside. You get to sit side by side with and learn from the people who were top traders at the best firms. Management (weird to even call them that) cares about employees and are genuinely good people. Great office culture, strong camaraderie.

Cons

At a small firm you have to work hard and long to do well (but not like i-banking hours).

Pros

- You get to work and have a real impact, you will be given serious responsibilities even as a junior engineer, something very contrary to my experience at larger companies - The work is technically challenging and we keep up with modern standards (C++20 for example) - The WLB is better than other firms in the industry. I have never been pressured to crunch to meet a deadline and I always feel that my time is respected, although there are of course support responsibilities depending on what you work on - Good compensation, although perhaps a little lower than more established firms in the industry

Cons

It's a marketmaking firm, so as someone that fundamentally does not find the work to be very meaningful, it can get a bit draining. Like sure, we provide liquidity to markets which technically helps reduce costs for investors / pensions / etc, but this is so far removed from actually providing a meaningful service or utility that quite obviously the main goal is just to make piles of money. Diversity is not great, particularly gender diversity, although I do find the environment to be welcoming. I speculate that this is primarily just because we get fewer female applicants.
