Pros

I loved my coworkers - they were the best part of OpenGov

Cons

I had an extremely negative experience at OpenGov in my short time there. My experience echoes that of most other reviews: high turnover, low support, no training, toxicity, unrealistic expectations for a product that just wasn't a good market fit, and low pay. Still, I never planned on writing a review. As a former employee, my experience after leaving the company has amplified my already negative view of OpenGov. OpenGov issued me an incorrect W2, which misrepresented my wages. After I noticed this, they sent me another incorrect W2-C that misrepresented what I paid in taxes. Despite multiple emails, calls, documentation, they repeatedly provided incorrect information about how a W-2C functions and failed to issue corrected withholding information properly. I had to hire an accountant specializing in taxes to confirm the obvious. They NEVER corrected this issue despite the IRS and the tax agency I hired confirming it was incorrect. The lack of expertise and accountability on such a straightforward issue was extremely costly and frustrating. The process required unnecessary time, money, and escalation on my end just to get basic payroll questions addressed accurately. Companies are legally required to give you accurate W2s, and OpenGov could not even do that. I had to spend over $1,000 for a tax agency to confirm what we already knew to be true thanks to the lack of expertise and incompetency of OpenGov.

Pros

OpenGov stands out as a truly collaborative workplace where the "Win as One" culture isn't just a tagline. As a Sr. Customer Success Manager, I've experienced firsthand how multiple go-to-market teams come together, with leadership actively listening to and valuing customer input at every level. This collaborative spirit creates an environment where we can genuinely influence and advocate for our customers, knowing our voices matter. What sets OpenGov apart is our unwavering commitment to AI innovation as a transformative force embedded throughout the organization. The company is investing heavily in AI-centered efficiencies that streamline how we work as a team and company, but more importantly, we're integrating AI into our products in meaningful and effective ways that directly benefit the agencies and customers we serve. We have dedicated AI Ops teams that actively uplevel our practice, ensuring we're equipped to leverage AI in our daily routines and stay at the cutting edge of government technology. From hackathons that encourage creative problem-solving to structured training and support, OpenGov demonstrates a genuine commitment to making AI accessible and practical for all team members. The impact of our work here is profound and tangible. I manage a focused book of business with high-profile accounts that are making real, measurable differences in their communities. Working with passionate small local and state governments who are in need of high-performance software is incredibly rewarding. Our software is thoughtfully built with government frameworks and accessibility in mind, developed in true partnership with our customers. This customer-centric approach means we're not just selling a product, we're solving real problems that directly affect people's lives and the communities we live in. Beyond the work itself, OpenGov invests meaningfully in its people. Leadership is inspiring and genuinely supportive, creating a culture where we work hard but also celebrate our wins. The variable compensation structure rewards performance well, and there's recognition that hustle, strategy, and good work deserves celebration. The mentorship program deserves special mention, it's focused, targeted, and has been instrumental in my development as an individual contributor. I have someone genuinely invested in my career growth and long-term goals, helping me reach the next level of maturity in my career. Additionally, our volunteer days allow us to extend our impact beyond software, supporting our communities in meaningful ways and reinforcing the mission-driven values that make OpenGov special. Beyond the work itself, OpenGov is strategically positioned for massive growth and impact. Being backed by CoxEnterprises as our parent company provides substantial financial support and resources that enable us to expand aggressively into the public sector SaaS space. This backing allows us to take calculated risks, invest in innovation, and pursue our mission to become the leading govtech company without the constraints that typically limit venture-backed startups. CoxEnterprises' commitment to our success means we have the stability and resources to attract top talent, invest in our people, and build world-class products.

Cons

A dynamic aspect of working at OpenGov is the fast-paced environment of building out our core product offerings with AI-driven innovation. This means there's a continuous learning curve, which isn't a drawback but rather an opportunity for those who thrive on growth and innovation. We have a massive budget that we spend on R&D to push yearly roadmaps for all our products in our portfolio with quarterly deliverables. We're supporting customers through beta phases and early waves of software launches, working with products that haven't yet had years of real-world testing like our more established platforms. This requires staying adaptable and keeping pace with how everything merges together in our public service platform. For individuals who love creating, innovating, and being at the forefront of technology implementation, this startup mentality is energizing and rewarding. It attracts the kind of team members who embrace change, contribute to building something new, and take pride in being part of the cutting edge of government technology.
