Pros

People are truly mission driven and care about saving the environment. Salaries in SF are competitive and the location is very convenient. It's pretty easy to get away with slacking. The company doesn't know how to write software well so everything takes forever. So good place to kick back and watch people argue while doing nothing.

Cons

What is considered the best place to work in DC does not hold up to SF norms for software. It's ok except the company is really big on telling the employees how great they have it when actually it's a pretty lame operation. Recruiting site promises stuff like free weekly massages or bring your dog to work, but both of those aren't true for half the company. The office is not comfortable, not enough meeting rooms, and people aren't encouraged to make the place their own. Not a SAAS company, just wishes it were. Mostly, custom stuff running for big utility companies being hand managed by an army of support staff.

Thanks for your review and the feedback. We appreciate being given an opportunity to address any concerns, offer a different perspective, or make adjustments to shape Opower as a best place to work. Also happy to hear you love our company mission, pay, and San Francisco location. Slacking: If someone’s goal was to slack, you are right, that might be easy to do. However, we favor trusting our employees over micromanaging them. We are thankful for the hundreds of employee contributors that are driving our company mission and helping reduce energy usage across the world, all the while being trusted that they’re giving it their all. Massages and dogs in the office: We do bring a massage therapist in weekly for employees to get a free massage, but you are correct that not every employee gets a massage every week. It is encouraged to rotate turns every other week, to allow everyone wanting a massage an opportunity. Also, all of Opower is dog friendly. Unfortunately, our current San Francisco location has a strict building policy that only permits service dogs, which is pretty common in the city. We would love for that to change! Office space: We hear you! The rapid growth of Opower has proven to be a challenge when it comes to meeting space. Good news is we just filed for a permit to build 3 more meeting rooms in our SF location. We recently added couches and chairs throughout the floor to provide places to get comfortable or have an impromptu meeting. Also, we would love for everyone to make their desk space their own. It’s a big eye opener to see things through an employee's eyes, so thank you again for the review.

Pros

Great culture, awesome product - feels amazing to be in tech AND doing great things for the environment, too! Pre-IPO!

Cons

Meals provided are only every Friday, which is pretty inconvenient having to deal the riffraff, long lunch lines & smell of Market Street on a mostly daily basis. It would be more cost effective and a great perk to add daily meals into the mix so we can collaborate more and get back to work with a full belly w/o the hassle.

Pros

Everyone's motivated. Highly skilled and smart folks. Everyone gets a chance to prove themselves by doing great things within or outside their responsibilities.

Cons

Sometimes people may be stepping on each others' toes. Many young managers in the company with little people skills.
