Pros

This is a pretty relaxed company to work for. They will hire you straight out of college and workload is low. Stress was rare or non-existent even if you are given one of the large projects to work on. Work life balance is probably the biggest win here. For the most if you are getting your work done quickly, you do not need to work 40 hours a week. No one keeps track of time very closely, and if you watch you will notice managers regularly ducking out early. It is all pretty obvious and when people have gotten upset about others not putting in the time, upper management sent out an email criticizing anyone who felt it was unfair. So when in Rome I suppose, just do not flaunt it. The benefits are supposedly very good but I was fortunate and never took advantage of them. As far as the ones I actually used they were the same as every company I have worked for.

Cons

There is not a lot of opportunity to grow as an engineer at Orchard Software, I would recommend investing in a side project to do in your personal time to learn modern technologies. The code base at orchard software is pretty old and has more than a few white elephants at this point. Management will tell you proudly that the codebase is the wild wild west, but what that really means is there is no hand on the wheel. No one is driving new technology, no one defines the look and "feel" of the code, and no one ensures people are actually writing what they are supposed to be writing. If bad code is being submitted there is no way to stop it from happening and you have to just hope you aren't downstream of it. Management does not seem to care about under the hood so long as the feature goes out the door. At the end of the day the devs who are passionate about technology leave when we realize the up hill battles we have to fight and that its just easier to go get paid more somewhere that already uses modern tech. Lastly... This may have just been my perspective but I found there was an unusual amount of workplace drama at orchard. I have worked at restaurants and retail stores with a less active grapevine. It was pretty off-putting to find that some of the managers were right in the middle taking part. Not very professional.
