      Pros

      It is Portland's largest employer. It is on the cutting edge of medical research. It is doing exciting things that draw the attention of the community and the nation.

      Cons

      The bureacracy is many layered and sometimes slow moving.

      Pros

      OHSU contributes 12% of your salary to a retirement plan for you. I have not come across any other research university that offers that kind of retirement compensation. Also, you can earn up to 5 weeks vacation.

      Cons

      There are a lot of dead weight employees working there. These are people that most likely couldn't make it anywhere else. The university hires them because their cheap. OHSU needs to develop a better career path for junior researchers. If you are a senior research associate working in a lab you will be doing the same job for the rest of your career. The university should recruit some of these people into other positions.

      Pros

      reputation, proximity of educational and clinical buildings (hospital), research activity, variety of educational programs

      Cons

      rigidly hierarchical, physician-dominated, with an anachronistic emphasis on empire-building versus caring for people. We do not need more towering glass buildings! Monuments to the money-makers are not progress.
