Pros

I was reflecting back on my decade-plus years' of experience with Orion and decided to post this on glassdoor. I tend to post something online when I want to pass a message or notice something negative. Posting something positive is rare. I guess that his human psychology - "Bad news travels fast" Feel proud to be part of the company that was founded in US and has been in business for 25 years At Orion I got exposed to the breadth of things in SDLC that would have probably taken double or triple the time to get such experience compared to other places I worked. Keeping up with technologies and managing client expectations is bread and butter of our group that I work with. This sounded like cliché to me few years back but having seen this closely at Orion I know how difficult this is for any organization especially over a span of 25 years. At Orion I get opportunity to interview people for some positions and over a period of time learnt that it is easy to pass judgement but very difficult to bring out the best in people. Organization has helped me value commitment and sincerity apart from being good technically Overall it has been a rewarding experience and I look forward to several such years

Cons

Organization has been growing rapidly last few years adding more clients. Associates who were part of earlier steady growth phase of the company probably were looking for more options. Things changed for better now but I wish we could have retained some of those folks. While dynamic nature of projects and technologies is great; it has its own challenges – I remember struggling to understand the performance issues with memory management when I switched from COM to .Net world. This ate into my deadlines. I see similar challenges even today – AI, analytics, visualization. Is this a “con” ? May be; may be not – depending on which day you ask me!

Worst place to live and work (Coimbatore Office)

Pros

Good place for Business Analysts. If you are a business analyst you can enjoy you life here. They directly assign you to client project when you join and train you with the real project in production, so that we can learn with a real project rather than learning on a sample projects.

Cons

Worst place for developers and QAs. Developers and QAs are treated like slaves. Higher officials forces and dump their pointless philosophies into you even though you do not want to follow. They even choose whom you should be friend with. If you are a friend of an employee who is not moving well with the management, you will get a pointless lecture to leave his friend. Business analysts will talk technically but they do not have any knowledge about what is best for users and clients and do not collect proper requirement. They speak about work quality and standard but there will be no standard and quality in the office. Very congested workspace even college labs will have more space. No ventilation and emergency exit, incase of emergency can call your loved ones and say goodbye thats all we can do. Air conditioners will not work properly. When there are fewer people in the office security will switch off the AC, heat will be emitted from the computers,it will be like stuck inside an oven. Restroom is spacious like an Indian Train Toilet. Before entering we have to knock the doors otherwise we will crush the person inside the restroom. Even the sheep are having spacious sheepfold. Chairs and desks are very worst. Chairs will break anytime, many of us fell because the chair broke suddenly. Desks will have rusty and pokey needles which scratch if we are unaware. Nowadays startups are having a good office environment. At the times of extended work and project emergency girls have to wait for sunrise so we can get a bus, no office cabs are available. Technical websites, technical blogs, Stackoverflow, Github, Medium are blocked for developers but open for Business analysts, do not know what a Business analyst is going to do with stackoverflow access. Computers given for development is very worst and slow, even a browsing centre will have high configuration machines Management is very stingy, In case of project emergencies developers are asked to stay overnight and work on the problem, at that time you can buy food and can claim the food bill, but the limit is 100 rupees for a person. (Better eat curd rice and work, that is the only affordable item in the midnight delivering restaurants menu list) No equality and full of discrimination, the employer gets green tea with organic cane sugar but the employees get worst coffee worth 3 rupees. Employees are not getting equal salary. The salary of a fresher in chennai branch is 30% more than the fresher who joints in coimbatore. We are also going through the same interview process, we are also having same skills but the pay is very low. Better give a unified pay or do not recruit employees. They think because of the management they are growing but the fact is that because of some loyal employees they are growing, try to understand and respect your employees. The management people in coimbatore is not having any knowledge or idea about software development paradigm, researching their own with the client project. No training for freshers, yet they expect them to follow proper coding standards. They are generating a good amount of revenue but still not having the mind to provide a better place for developers. In simple words, it is a software firm without proper computers, without proper internet, without safety, without proper chairs and desks, without cabs, without proper management but expects proper employee and great products. ADVICE TO EMPLOYEES: Bring your own computer, chair, fan, data connection, Instant cup noodles for the night stay, Oxygen cylinder, Gas mask, Mini parachute and a Rescue rope for an emergency, or simply quit and find a better place.
