Pros

Having worked for a few different companies I can safely say that I have never worked for a company and for a group of managers that cared more for its people. Everyone I work with does everything they can to make you feel like part of the PCL family.

Cons

The construction industry rarely provides the option for a standard 8 hour day. You have to be willing to make the effort to be successful in this industry.

Great Culture, Best Place to Work

Pros

Probably the greatest benefit to working for PCL is the employee ownership model that allows salaried employees to share in the profits of the company. Not only is this a great way of compensating long-term employees, but it is part of the culture that fosters good stewardship of the company and employees that care about the work. PCL is also highly involved with local charities and even allows employees to occasionally volunteer for service during scheduled work days, effectively getting paid to volunteer. I could go on about the great people and culture here, but it is no wonder that PCL has been a regular on Fortune's Best Places to Work list for eleven years in a row. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years working at PCL and I am so glad that I was able to find my way here.

Cons

The cons are mainly things that are due to the nature of the construction industry in general such as relocation to projects and long hours that may be required to get the work done.

Large Company With Small Company Feel

Pros

Being 100% employee owned at all levels (CEO to file clerks), everyone is responsible for the success, or failure, of the company. There is a level of commitment that everyone shows towards the company and one another that I have not seen anywhere else; it is an amazing culture I can only attribute to the employee ownership model. Even though it is a large company, it has a small company feel. I believe that management truly cares about the employee. There are long hours required at times, but my managers have always pushed work / life balance and at times have forced me to take time off when I was working too much.

Cons

The nature of the construction industry is that you usually have to work long hours. The company really pushes work / life balance, but it seems difficult to take extended vacations. A program that would allow employees in high stress positions with a certain number of years tenure to take a leave of absence or extended vacation might help prevent burnout that is common in this industry (same issue other General Contractors have).
