Thank you for the input! It's encouraging to know that you're experiencing a people-centered approach at PLOS. It can indeed be a challenge to provide well-structured roles without "other duties creep" when team resources or priorities change, especially given the transitions that have come with new leadership the past couple of years. It's been great to see team structures maturing and stabilizing, and I'm optimistic that will be the case on your team as well :).

Pros

Making scientific research available to all. Engaged and creative staff. Flexible with work from home and remote options. Good benefits. Encourages and enables career development. New CEO is effective and accessible and doing a great job fixing the errors of previous executives.

Cons

The culture clash between the traditional publishing industry and scrappy tech industry within the organization can slow decision making and execution. It's tough being a nonprofit in the most expensive city in the US. Some teams need more staff.

Nice place to work

Pros

- Busy atmosphere with smart, friendly staff who seem to genuinely enjoy each others' company. - Pay competitive for publishing or nonprofit. - Strong founding mission and values. - Opportunities to learn / get involved in different projects and initiatives. Works best for people who like to multi-task, problem solve, and are very flexible.

Cons

Suffers from some of the growing pains listed in other reviews: high turn over, unclear communication, shifting projects and priorities. Most likely not a good fit for those who prefer structure, clear instructions, consistency in tasks and responsibilities.
