Pros

Pros include the flexibility, I am able to work from home and have never had an issue when I needed to rearrange my schedule or take off time. The experience and diversity of clients and co-workers is a plus. PPD also has decent facilities and social events.

Cons

Salary is very low compared to other CROs (large and small). Hard work and performance is not rewarded and management is completely out of touch. The biggest con is also the outsourcing they now do with the Philippines, allowing staff in the Wilmington location to be laid off and replaced by much lower paid staff in PHI. PPD has turned into another greedy corporation looking for the cheapest labor and highest return, no matter who they screw over (employees and clients).

Pros

Gives you a good sense of what a terrible company is like and what company to avoid in the future. It's a decent place to network with people who've left the company for much better opportunities.

Cons

To paraphrase the venerable words of a departed supervisor "Contrary to the old adage that life is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer panic -- life in PPD is like long stretches of panic that is rarely interrupted by moments of boredom". Such is the life at a company that 1) Overworks its staff-- assigning work at above capacity leading to burn-out. 2) Pays little for a technically demanding job (starting at 14$ an hour folks) with 2% "raises" every year (which is about the rate of inflation). 3) Many poor managers who aren't suited for the job, and suffer little to no consequences for poor management. It's no wonder that PPD suffers from terribly low employee morale, depressing work environment and massively high turnover rates (as high as 40% in some departments). The few decent managers are left trying to desperately replace the constant losses and suffering the consequences. The company is a haven for short-sighted policies that doesn't mind trading in their organs for a couple extra dollars.

Pros

Strong training and infrastructure, nice facilities (at headquarters). PPD hires entry level/no experience employees (good way to enter the industry). The new CEO (as of 2012/2013 from Pfizer) is a smart guy with strong experience and will lead the company well. Nice HQ location. That's about all the good there is.

Cons

Management is clueless. My accounts shifted periodically so I got to work with several managers, very few of which had any clue what was going on with their teams/accounts. Typical complaints of "overworked and underpaid" really don't convey what it's like at PPD. Lowest paying company in the industry and they work you twice as hard (which explains why so many people left after only a few months). Many employees use this as a jumping off point, PPD will hire entry level with no experience but has robust training-get your foot in the industry door by working and training here-you'll be recruited by a competitor in no time for twice the pay and half the hours (give or take). I was clocking 100+ hour work weeks due to demanding clients and had to justify this to my manager (again-clueless about the team's workload) even though I was salaried. Work life balance does not exist-although they claim it's a high priority. Quality of life tripled when I left. Limited career advancement (in fact promotions/raises were just cut from twice yearly to annually). You're just a number. Specific to my department-Management shows little to no appreciation to their employees for their time and efforts, unless you're one of the few favored individuals, you will work most nights and weekends, even managers had this burden, you will be disrespected by your sales reps and treated as though you are beneath them.
