Pros

People friendly and passionate about the specific business vertical they are in (winery, restaurant, newspaper, food manufacturing, construction)

Cons

Low margin businesses made worse by the owner who treats all companies as hobbies. Definitely lack of strong leadership and any evidence of management science being practiced

Pros

Wide variety of issues and stories to cover. Editorial staff are generally solid and professional.

Cons

Management style company-wide is somewhat inconsistent, there also are no pay raises or other incentives for improvement. In this company it is a matter of who you know, and the situation at the Gresham press plant is a case in point. There is a woman there who should have been fired years ago but somehow hangs on because of personal connections. The final printed products suffer in quality because of this.

Pros

Co-workers are smart, kind, hard-working and fun. My direct manager was amazing: Clear about what the job entailed, helpful when things ran off course, devoted to the company as well as its staff. Though pay was low, the benefits are pretty generous. The Human Resources staff is awesome! Very helpful, even with complex or difficult questions on quick turnaround. HR director Lisa Mayo is very kind and very professional. The best HR exec I’ve ever encountered. In a dwindling print-media environment, Pamplin offers one of the few opportunities in town to continue working at a newspaper (actually, more than 20 papers). Company is privately owned by a local businessman rather than a media chain.

Cons

Occasional layoffs, high turnover in ad dept. Editorial staffing seems solid. People in news are seasoned pros and they stick around.
