Pros

Great benefits; friendly; laid back; low stress; As far as trade publishing goes, they are one of the best to work for. Great place to be 'comfortable', if that's what you crave. Work-Life balance is top notch here; If you have kids this is about as flexible and understanding as it gets. As far as trade publishing goes, PRH is best in class. They are absolutely industry leaders in print publishing - the supply chain, operations, sales and production capabilities are at the top of the industry, and a well-oiled machine. Generally pretty stable. With the merger of Penguin and Random House, they have positioned themselves to be the most stable of the big trade publishers for years to come.

Cons

When it comes to digital and direct to consumer, they are pretty clueless. Management is full of print people, so it's not surprising. "Digital" is seen as hard and risky. Unfortunately, not a data or design driven environment. Decisions tend to be ego driven which can lead to frustration among employees who are doing their best and offering fresh ideas and approaches. Too much micromanagement, in general. Imprints, teams and business units can be provincial. Lack of ethnic and academic diversity in the workforce. This certainly doesn't help creativity and innovation, and leads to the perception that pedigree matters more than ability.

Pros

Office culture is generally friendly and people are eager to help. The benefits are good. Perks include free books and a large number of vacation days. Company discounts at museums and in-house exercise classes, gym, and wellness benefits are nice. PRH also offers a number of professional development opportunities and some mentorship programs.

Cons

In editorial specifically, it is very difficult to achieve recognition and/or promotion through hard work. Moving from editorial assistant to editor is likely to take 5-6 years or more in some departments, and as a result there is a lot of turnover. There is an expectation that editors and assistants will work constantly without overtime, check email while out of the office, and avoid taking time off. As the company is slow to recognize achievements and promote talent, so it is slow to change on the whole. The publishing industry is in desperate need of innovation, and yet publishers are afraid to experiment. There is a culture of fear around risk. Management tends to miss the forest for the trees.

Pros

Great benefits, lots of corporate perks. Great name to add to your resume.

Cons

No room for growth. No room for encouragement. A lot of upper management making decisions and not really looking at things from the bottom up. Would rather ignore the issues, than work through them. Low pay. I would suggest, if you are unhappy going to HR immediately and looking for alternatives.
