Pros

The cafeteria is not bad.

Cons

Penn State Health is a terrible company to work for with lots of internal politics and a perpetual in-fighting between two halves of the organization. It reminds me of high school. They will underpay you, offering significantly less than the market rate for the role and since they are a non-profit, they do not pay bonuses. They will lie about their education benefit, promising multiple times that you will get a massive discount on the tuition at Penn State University, a standard thing when you work for such an organization. Only to pull a bait and switch once you actually apply for a program and say that you only get that benefit if you work in the hospital, you cannot get it if you work for shared services. So if sending your kids to college or going back yourself is important to you, verify which category you fall under. Because the difference between 75% off PSU tuition and $5,250 (employer max towards tuition a year which you can get anywhere) is massive and could mean the difference between being able to afford a degree or mortgaging 5+ years of your future with student loan debt. The upper rungs of senior management seem alright, but we never hear from them. They are in constant meetings and don't make much of an attempt to put in face time with the rest of the organization. Sadly, bad middle management will make or break your experience here.

Pros

Offers great health insurance plans and a decent 401k match as far as I am concerned.

Cons

The community of the company is awful quite frankly, and the company itself seems to be more focused on financial profit. They treat their physicians and other employees that were acquired in any of their mergers awfully. In the administrative roles there is absolutely no room for growth, only lateral career shifts. Management is unresponsive.

Pros

Stable job with benefits. Good orientation program. Starbucks available in the hospital.

Cons

Action is never taken to remove people with "outdated talent" from positions, so people remain in their roles for decades and are never re-educated or prompted to improve themselves. There are a lot of leadership roles that overlap and have undefined ownership, so the levels of bureaucracy make it impossible for a motivated person to navigate. Business processes are interrupted and unwieldy. No sense of ownership. Good managers give up. Bad managers thrive by bullying those who take initiative. Most employees do not make eye contact and rarely smile at each other -- I think this speaks volumes.
