      Time off, benefits, many employment opportunities, large HR community to learn from and work with

      Cons

      Very political environment, even in Human Resources. It is definitely who you know and who likes you that determines your career at Penn State. Implementation of Shared Services model was painful and not executed well.

      Pros

      Can't beat the benefits and the work/life balance

      Cons

      Seems impossible to get in and it takes forever, but staying isn't guaranteed. Be mindful of the work "contract" in the job descriptions. Trying to move internally is as daunting as trying to get in from the outside.

      Great University, and it's making a LOT of money

      Pros

      Great to work with students, up to date technology and resources. Professional faculty (mostly), excellent location, part of a large, well-known university.

      Cons

      The Staff has an incredible amount of responsibility but constantly reminded they are "staff" and not faculty. The students would not be admitted, scheduled or graduated without the staff. Faculty are compensated quite well (plus additional summer contracts, too) while the staff is expected to be thrilled with 1.5% raises and salaries in the mid 30's to very low 40's.
