Pros

A jobs as a research assistant really depends on your professor. My professor was cool enough that my hours were flexible and decent.

Cons

There really is no con. You should know what you are getting into after the first two weeks of work. The professor could be demanding on expected work.

Pros

Collaboration with other groups, departments, machine shop. Very open atmosphere, if you need help or advice can talk to any professor, student, or staff. Everyone is professional. Access to equipment and labs is incredible, walk into a lab, ask a few questions, propose a collaboration, buy them a beer/coffee and your are off.

Cons

None, You make your own. Personal problems can happen, but its best to role with the punches and maintain the best working relationships you can. Being friendly and helpful has long term benefits, sometimes not immediately apparent.
