Pros

-Departments tend to be supportive of students: professionally, financially, and outside the classroom -A number of extracurricular activities and groups make for a more complete and positive educational experience

Cons

-Some tenured faculty are not good about obtaining enough research grant money to support their students -Some faculty seek to use grad students as cheap labor, keeping them years after when they should have graduated -The university's increasing emphasis on diversity is interfering with creating a climate where one's colleagues are competent and good at what they do -Grad students are being instructed to "dumb down" coursework in order to increase enrolment in various department classes
