Pros

This is the environment where you are paid while learning. Depending to the department you are involved with the conditions may change, but the faculty is generally very supportive, and the work is paying itself when your work is recognized by conferences, journals.

Cons

Since when you are a graduate assistant you are in late 20s or 30s it is time to have a family, but the income may not be enough to support a family.

Pros

some of the best things about penn state are its stability and certainty in keeping jobs in state college. the people do make it a great place to work. we work together as a team. people generally like working with one another. the vision to reach students is uncompromising and fufulling. i'm not sure there is another college or university out there that reaches as deeply into the community and the state itself. there is growth (although slow at times). the benefits package is incredible. it makes up for dismal salaries and smaller chances to advance. advancement is heralded, but not seen frequently.

Cons

salaries are terrible (but probably on par for the education market). there is a TON of favoritism.

Pros

Lots of opportunities for advancement. Freedom to perform independent research with lots a funding available. Great atmosphere with helpful people who are excited about science and want to collaborate on multiple projects. Interdisciplinary research also a great plus, and there are a lot of great seminars available if want it advance your knowledge.

Cons

State College is cold and cloudy all the time. It is academia so depending on where you are working you can be low on funding. If you are a tech you have to train rotation students, undergraduates, many of which do not stay with the lab for a long time.
