      Pros

      Probably the best two things I got out of my time at Penn State was the education I received and the people I met.

      Cons

      (This is my personal experience with PSU - please keep in mind that this is not true for all departments) The culture in my department was not very friendly to graduate students, especially those wanting to start a family. Many people in the department harassed graduate students emotionally, verbally and sometimes sexually with very little rebuke or acknowledgement from the department.

      Pros

      Good fair hours, potential for overtime work during Holidays if that is your thing. Excellent benefits. Excellent opportunities to learn new skills. Excellent opportunities to advance your academic career and earn a new degree. (Strong discounts for FTE employees for course credit.) Opportunities for advancement for those who work hard. Excellent work/life balance encouraged. Stronger, more inclusive values the higher you advance. Senior leadership have clear plan for the future.

      Cons

      Ancient history inter-departmental politics/silos. Can be very difficult to see to changes any wider than your immediate department. The Penn State bureaucracy can be difficult to learn and manage for new employees. Starting salaries are low for the quantity and quality of work expected.
