Good in many ways, not so good in others

Pros

People are not confrontational. Lack of regimentation compared to other employers. Nice facilities.

Cons

Pioneer has been successful for so long that many people within Pioneer believe that how they have done things is the *best* way to do things. However are changing and Pioneer is starting to fall behind in many critical areas. Benefits are eroding as DuPont moves Pioneer to their benefit programs. Example - Delta Dental was switched out for an East Cost insurance plan which few dentists in the area accept. Sigh. Also, DuPont is starting to absorb more and more Pioneer functions, which means a lot more bureaucracy in many areas. Sigh.

Great Company In Decline

Pros

Good salary and 401(k) match. Many positions offer a fair degree of autonomy and flexibility, at least for now. Generally friendly co-workers. Some positions offer exposure to cutting-edge technology in IT and Plant research.

Cons

As DuPont corporate has become more deeply involved in the affairs of the company, there has been a marked shift in the attitude toward employees. Instead of being regarded as assets that should be supported to maximum productivity, employees are now clearly regarded as costs that must be minimized. Chronic under-investment and the layering on of increasingly complex and burdensome administrative structures will probably make recovery and growth impossible, so cuts will grow worse over time. DuPont's attempt to run a business with multi-year product development cycles, relatively short product lifetimes, and a year-long production cycle on a quarter-by-quarter basis are also inflicting serious damage on the organization. Again, this will likely result in further cuts and degradation of the work environment over time.
