Uninformed Micromanagement and Lack of Respect

Pros

Engineering staff throughout the company is top-notch. Very skilled and very willing to share knowledge and help others when senior management and institutional barriers do not prevent it.

Cons

The success of Presidio, at least in the Mid-Atlantic region, is almost entirely attributable to the skill of the large engineering staff. Despite this, the engineering staff is treated as virtual 2nd class citizens by both the sales team and senior management. Pay is average at best with raises only granted when specifically begged for and usually not even then. Management refuses to hire enough staff to handle the workload and therefore expects the current staff to regularly work 60-70 hour weeks to keep up. They were even recently considering prohibiting engineering staff from taking any vacation days in June, July, or August as they believe that is usually a busy time. Sr. Management hires highly skilled and professional technical people and then treats them like teenagers who need to be micromanaged every minute of the day instead of trusting that people will act and perform professionally. Every year there is a policy change resulting in a reduction in pay or days of PTO or some other reduction in benefits for the majority of employees, especially those that have been there the longest. Senior Management in the Mid-Atlantic region is 100% short-term tactical in their outlook and management style. There is no planning or strategy of any kind. It is a $1.3 billion company whose budgets consist of a revenue goal and a hope that expenses are less than revenue. Any expenditure over $300 requires direct written approval by a divisional President. It is amazing and a testament to the rank and file technical staff that they are at all successful.

Pros

Presidio provided great opportunity to work on demanding and complex projects. Many of the engineering staff are very competent and there is great collaboration and growth among the teams. Presidio has a good reputation for being able to deliver on projects, particularly around Cisco.

Cons

While Presidio has for the most part maintained its reputation for technical competence, the leadership culture has changed dramatically. In the past it was a great place to work and the executive leadership was engaged. Today's executive leadership is distant from the people and is either disinterested or not capable of really engaging with the people that get the job done. The corporate CTO is an exception to this. Most real people leadership in the organization is at the first line of management or among peers.
