Pros

Supportive counselors and some admin, teamwork amongst staff (some houses). Many counselors are great people to befriend and be on shift with. Great for entry level social work/psych position as you get to work with clients from all backgrounds, personalities and experiences. Able to get your feet wet in the mental and public health system with the typical nonprofit downfalls.

Cons

Consistently short staffed due to lack of hiring and lack of compensation for current staff to be able to pay living wages considering the difficulty of the job. Counselors hold many hats (case managers, crisis interventions, group leaders, therapists, treatment coordinators) many of which are not delineated in the contract and not adequately compensated for.

very flexible, Program managers show a lot of appreciation for employees that pick up a lot of shifts. And you can build your own schedule so there's a lot of flexibility.

Cons

Can be difficult to get used to procedures at different programs.
