Pros

Used to be good before the new CEO and CTO came in.

Cons

The new CEO Suresh Krishna announced in the beginning of 2026 that a new Protolabs office will open up in India that will staff 900 workers. Basically outsourcing accounting, sales, marketing, IT, and finance to India. He even said we have to fly to India to train workers. Who is taking this deal? The job market is still good for talented people. Look elsewhere if you're not interested in short term employment and going to India to help outsource.

Our expansion into India in 2026 is part of our global growth strategy, it is not an outsourcing initiative, and no U.S. roles were eliminated as part of this expansion. Protolabs is building additional global capability to support continued growth following a record performance year in 2025. Expanding into India allows us to enhance innovation, strengthen our digital and operational capabilities, and better serve customers around the world with 24/7 support. At the same time, we continue to invest in our U.S. workforce and are actively hiring across multiple functions. We remain committed to growing talent globally while maintaining strong teams in all regions where we operate. More information about our U.S. career opportunities can be found here: https://www.protolabs.com/about-us/careers/

Pretty good

Pros

Healthy supportive friendly attitude from leadership. People are generally pretty great to work with and there's a lot of collaboration. Quite software-focused despite manufacturing being its end product. Moving around the company is encouraged. Lots of smart folks. Lots of solvable problems to sharpen your wits against and types of software to get experience with/learn from. It feels like a pretty safe and promising company to work for if you can get established.

Cons

PTO could be better. Compensation seems okay, but the math they use for raises doesn't track consistently. Bonuses are kind of lackluster. Seniority seems to matter more than individual ability in a number of ways. A lot of the software problems are really fairly mundane/fundamental, but developers have tried to "reinvent the wheel" over the years so they seem more complicated than they necessarily have to be (this might not be a "Con" for everyone).
