Pros

The work atmosphere is very laid back and low stress. The benefits package is good. Employees get a lot of paid time off as well as Medical, Vision, Dental. West Lafayette is a wonderful place to raise a family with great schools - although the winters can be tough. Working for a university also affords a lot of opportunities to learn by taking courses etc. There are some cutting edge projects going on at Purdue so getting involved in one or more of them can provide opportunities to increase knowledge. Being able to cheer for the Boilermaker teams is also a big plus.

Cons

Since Purdue is an educational institution the culture is one where educational degrees are put on a mantle when compared to professional experience. To really advance to any meaningful position at Purdue requires a PhD as anything less is viewed as inferior. Also, most professors and managers believe any work can probably be done by Graduate assistants and do not value professionals too much.

Pros

Purdue gives me flexible hours and high pay as a student-employee; even when I only get 10hrs a week I make as much as most (non-professional) students working 20hrs or more elsewhere off-campus. I get can easily get to work by walking and can come in between classes (I'm flextime however). Many of the projects I'm associated with publish work which I can show to future employers as proof of my accomplishments while a student-employee here at Purdue.

Cons

I rarely get my full 20-hours a week due to lack of work to be done (This is somewhat normal for "flex-time" student employees). Timecard turn-ins can be a pain if my boss leaves early or is teaching a class and I can't get his signature. Getting paid bi-weekly can be rought sometimes.

Pros

It's ok to work there while you are getting your graduate degree, such as MS or PhD. You are usually paid peanuts, but instead you get free tuition. And Purdue University is very well recognized name among the employers. You probably going to start on a strong foot with your first job if you have Purdue University in your resume. Also, while working there you have a chance to interact with pretty smart and knowledgeable people.

Cons

Beyond the fact that you are not paid much for positions like Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant, which is a norm for all around academia, there is only one downside to working at the Physics Department of Purdue University. And it's a huge one. Everybody is completely wrapped up in the internal departmental politics. There is no real sharing of ideas between different groups, which is not really conducive to a healthy research.
