Pros

Purdue University offers an excellent research atmosphere and a strong undercurrent of interdisciplinary collaboration. The graduate student pool is also reasonably strong. The recent research-park developments are cutting edge and allow a strong research focussed curriculum and good grantsmanship. The IT, grants office, and administrative support are strong points. The academic environment is enriching and competent and provides for a rewarding experience. Compensation is reasonable for a school in its ranking and the cost of living in West Lafayette generally, although it hasn't kept pace with recent inflation and home prices. Insurances (except for health insurance) offered at Purdue such as STD, LTD, ADD, Legal, are good.

Cons

Common facilities, Renovations, and HR are perhaps some of the weak points. The health insurance is poor for the high price for staff earning >$75K/yr. Compensation is lower than other Big 10 schools such as UIUC, U-Wisconsin-Madison, Wash-U and UMich-AnnArbor which leads to some attrition. Science and humanities pay is lower than engineering and business, regardless of background, which creates some inequality. Overall compensation is adequate for the cost of living in West Lafayette, although this is changing with the recent inflation in home prices in West Lafayette by 50% from 2017 - 2022. Purdue does not provide a home-buying allowance to incoming faculty. Several of the paid benefits and some insurance products (such as paid time off or sick leave/FMLA) do not apply in the summer for academic year employees, which is annoying.

Pros

- Good working conditions - Very diverse projects - The staff is pleasant and supportive - Reasonable workload - Work from home - The management is peaceful and gives you the freedom to develop your work

Cons

- Excessive amount of meetings - Relative lack of organization - A little bureaucratic processes, largely due to the fact that it is a public university that requires various levels of approvals - As the business is Education, there are not many growth opportunities for my position - Environment conducive to professional stagnation
