Pros

Qualcomm is a large, but smoothly running organization. Management has a very progressive outlook on wireless technology and is not adverse to trying new ideas. As an individual engineer, you and your work are respected. Projects are not 'overcrowded' and 90% of engineers have their own office. Also, the company realizes that the most talented engineers have the option of working elsewhere. For that reason performance reviews occur once every 6 months. The average raise is 3 - 5% (every 6 months!). It is common for engineers to move around within the organization. The company provides a mechanism for new learning and for movement to different areas of the technology.

Cons

The company is essentially a massive IP portfolio that covers many different areas of technology. Occasionally one can feel disconnected from the rest of the organization.

Pros

One of the very few big hi-tech employers in San Diego, CA. Cutting edge work with nice work/life balance. San Diego is the best places to work with best weather and nice family living.

Cons

Engineering centric company, business knowledge not much valued. Focused heavily on wireless communication technology and licensing for it's core competency, no consumer product or diversification into services. If Qualcomm boat rocks, then you are staring at relocating to other places for a similar job. No other wireless big-name employer has been able to get a foothold in San Diego. Ericsson, Nokia and TI have close operations in San Diego after failed attempts to establish business in San Diego.
