      DO NOT Work as a Research Project Specialist

      Pros

      The work is rewarding and the people you work with are fantastic

      Cons

      HR and the pay structure. As a research project specialist, your labor will be taken advantage of and you will be underpayed. You will perform vital work and have more senior staff take credit so they can justify keeping you your current position. You will have no ability for recourse and your "manager" who makes the determination of your salary will have no idea what you do on a day to day basis. I have talked to my manager less than five times in over two years working at RAND and she has treated me with disrespect.

      Great mission, wonderful colleagues, some changes long overdue

      Pros

      RAND's mission is truly inspiring and it makes a difference in the day to day - everyone around me was proud to work for an organization that is working hard to solve the world's most complex problems. I worked with many smart and hard working people and learned a lot.

      Cons

      There are some managers and even senior leaders that are simply not meeting the requirements of their jobs, are very ineffective at leading teams, it's pretty much broadly known to everyone that works with them or for them, and yet they still have their jobs. Support staff are sometimes treated disrespectfully by the researchers.

      Pros

      You can work on a wide range of areas and skills at RAND and can enjoy an unusual level of independence in your schedule and areas of work.

      Cons

      While not malicious, the organization is structured to take advantage of its staff as much as possible while providing no structured support. You are on your own to ensure you don't get put in a bad spot and set up to fail; and while that may be a reasonable expectation for a short term gig it gets old over time. Work life balance can be non-existent and has many of the characteristics of an "up or out" culture without any of the upside financial rewards typical of companies that explicitly use that management style.
