Pay is some of the lowest in the industry. If you want to get on the retail career track, fine, they'll coach you, but if you want something else, say getting into their headquarters, don't expect much help. Hours can vary greatly and rarely have any consistency (both in terms of number of hours and typical shift).

I found that my training was very inefficient. I was often reprimanded for making mistakes, however, most of the mistakes were due to the fact that it was not covered in training. Even as a cashier, you have many responsibilities. I feel as though it took me two months to feel confident, and even after that I was still discovering things not covered in training. Also on a more personal note, REI employees are very clique-ish. If you don't fit the typical "hippie, go green" type, then it can be VERY difficult to fit in. I'm not happy working there, but I stay because it has great benefits for a retail position.
