Pros

Great people, decent benefits, option to telecommute if your job supports it, onsite gym and cafeteria, and a chance to contribute to improving conditions around the world.

Cons

The IT division is a mess, and has been for years. A fairly recent CIO change only made matters worse. IT management frequently joked (in a very negative fashion) about non-IT staff and administration. Was embarrassed most days to be in IT. Almost no chance for advancement beyond the rare grade promotion. VERY stagnant environment, even with the recent reorganizations. For 15 years it was nearly impossible to get fired from IT. Now no one has any job security, unless they are in management.

Pros

Overall, RTI offers competitive salary and benefits though it's an increasingly top-heavy organization where lower-level staff are significantly disadvantaged.

Cons

RTI's once admirable mission statement ('to improve the human condition') no longer applies to its own dedicated staff. Instead, this 'mantra' is used to mask the increasingly political, profit-driven internal bureaucracy that promotes and protects toxic Executive/HR leaders who exploit employees and cultivate dysfunctional, divisive, and stressful work environments. Combined with constantly changing strategic goals and leadership turnover, even the highest performing, most capable staff are increasingly miserable and most admit to regularly enduring burnout and poor work-life balance. RTI's intense focus on growth and profits, its lack of accountability for self-serving toxic executives, along with the weaponization of its 'HR machine' have greatly diminished the employee experience.

Pros

Working with real people (who are not employed by RTI) in the field. Amazing people! Opportunity to interact with people in all socioeconomic groups in their own environment.

Cons

Unethical and possibly illegal practices. Told we would be working 20-25 hours per week for 2 months and then work would taper. Even with travel assignments, there wasn't 20-25 hours per week the FIRST week of the Trimester! Dangerous work...you are told to go out at night into seedy neighborhoods without an escort. Ironically, few people in these neighborhoods hold down jobs and those people could be contacted during the daylight hours which would be safer.. But RTI wants you out nights and weekends. I WANTED to work nights and weekends so that is not the issue but putting my safety at risk is an issue. Breaches in confidentiality contrary to their policies. What is written, what is said, what is expected are not consistent.....they will not provide copies of documents that you've signed. This is the worst company I have worked for in 30 years, and yes, I have worked for other research companies.
