Pretty face, but "pretty is as pretty does"

Pros

Very good work facilities, buildings, computers, etc. Intelligent, congenial people to work with; most line employees are great people. Good outdoor recreational facilities.

Cons

Aside from a decent exercise room on main campus, there is no indoor recreational facility (small gym with basketball, volleyball, ping pong, etc.) Middle to top management is poor quality: short-sighted, poor relationship with staff, play play favorites; discrimination. RTI prides itself on saying that it "improves the human condition"; however, this only applies (sometimes) to clients, and not to employees. There have been many layoffs at RTI in the last year.

+ Projects where you feel like you make a difference. + Many outstanding professionals; world class talent. + Good diversity of work and opportunities to work on new types of projects with different methods. + Professional development is strongly encouraged. + Leadership is approachable and supportive. + Good onsite cafeteria and fitness center + Great opportunity for working from home

Cons

- Collaboration is horrible; plenty of instances of one group within the organization actively undermining another group. - Challenge of work/life balance and percent sold that exists here and in many other contract research organizations. - Not an agile organization - they want to venture into new and innovative areas but aren't willing to do that with excellence - on par with the work they typically do.

Interesting work but not without business challenges

Work is extremely interesting and socially valuable; staff in general are extremely collegial

Cons

Communication across offices was difficult -- Waltham is a spoke and RDU is definitely the hub of all important decision making. This posed a number of problems in recruitment of new staff -- often the wage/salary dynamics of the RDU market dominated the thinking rather than what it takes to hire into the Boston market. For some kinds of positions that doesn't matter, but for more commercially focused work the wage/salary disparity between the two regions was striking. It made it nearly impossible to recruit staff at an acceptable comp level.
