Pros

Cheap cost of living in this part of PA

Cons

I was placed on a team with employees who have figured out how to game the system. Most of their day is spent chatting, surfing the web, and goofing off. Technical milestones and deadlines are routinely missed. Site management prefers not to get involved. Since the customer is not technical enough to know how many hours individual tasks should take there are no consequences for someone who spends an extra week, month, or year on a simple task that should have been accomplished long ago.

Pros

9/80 schedule. Work life balance. Free dental. Nice coworkers. Developing tools for our soldiers is a perk. Weeks and half at Christmas.

Cons

Company is going to tiny cubes and open concept. Even managers don’t have a private space. Managements is very stingy and cheap due to low profit margins I suspect. Seating arrangement is isolating. They should allow similar job functions to sit together. “On your own time” policy is ridiculous and limits collaboration and learning. As with a lot of companies, lower level management is terrified of upper management and over reacts to every automated system ding we get. They have created too many processes and systems to manage our work. I think they will get burned by smaller, more nimble companies.
