Pros

It is a well known name in the Portland community and therefore looks good on a resume. It's a good place to gain some experience and then take that skill set elsewhere.

Cons

Management would rather have a lean headcount work 50-60 hours a week than spend money to give their workers a normal workload. Most employees can't take time off. Would rather hire talent from outside than develop talent inside the company. No sucession planning - jobs are created in silos that don't feed to any other positions so there's no growth opportunity. Company culture promotes gossip & back stabbing to get ahead. Promotions & raises are earned by who you know, not how hard you work. Ran by right-wing executives who still think it is the 1990s (uses old technology and refuses to open benefits to domestic partners). Absent Executive Leadership - CEO lives in New York and doesn't have a presence in the corporate office.

Pros

This company has it all: it's GREEN because it's all about recycling metal; it's been around since 1906 so it's STABLE; it's DIVERSE, with a female CEO and diverse executives in key roles; it's PROFITABLE having paid dividends every quarter since it went public in 1993; and it's ETHICAL, as a recipient of the Ethisphere World's Most Ethical Company Award seven years in a row. In addition, the work is interesting and provides an opportunity to learn something new every day and to work with some talented people.

Cons

Working at Schnitzer is not for everyone - the recycling business is highly regulated, very competitive, and susceptible to global markets and politics. As a result, one must be comfortable with cross-functional responsibilities, being on a constant learning curve, and with figuring out how to work smarter. It's been characterized as running like a "start-up" where every day there is a tsunami of new challenges.
