Pros

The great thing about Red Hat is that you in general are given the freedom to do what you want to do. While demand is high, if you have a passion in a certain area, management is open to you taking your role in that direction. Also depending on the role, there is a lot of flexibility to work from home/flex hours. If you like working for a company that allows associates to be vocal and passionate, this is the place for you!

Cons

With this kind of culture, often people are left to figure things out without too much guidance. Some thrive in this environment, while others sink. Also pay is not nearly competitive enough.

Pros

My job is challenging to the point of not knowing whether I can succeed, which provides quite a thrill once you get used to it. Also, I get to work on truly ground-breaking ideas that I've never even thought about before joining the company. Finally, people listen to you here...no matter whether you've just joined and they're a few levels up the management chain, if your ideas are good they get attention.

Cons

The business is growing so fast it can be pretty hard to keep up with the things you need to know to do your job. Also, because we're so interested in technological innovation, it seems like we're constantly interested in a slightly better solution than the one we have (for a given internal need). These collude to produce an environment where documentation can sometimes be hard to find, and it can mean tracking down a specific person to get answers you need to do your work. Since we're a truly global business, that may mean dealing with awkward timezone differences to ask questions.

Pros

A great company to work for. I've been there for many years, and it still has a small-ish feel even though it has grown 5x (employees) during that time. Most of my coworkers in the engineering department are smart, motivated, and good to work with. They stick to their principles of open source. Communication internally is very good. I feel like in general, the company cares about their employees and tries (within reason) to make us happy. It's a stable environment and I've never felt any concerns about layoffs or downsizing - if anything it's the opposite (growing pains).

Cons

Of all the jobs I've had internally, I've found management to be very hands-off. i.e. "You know what you need to do, so do it". At times I've wished I had more direction, but I'd take that over a micromanager.
