Pros

To be part of the Open Source movement and doing some genuinely innovative things rather than just donkey work at an old time employer like Microsoft.

Cons

Many of the senior management are close friends or relatives meaning nepotism is rife at this 2000 person company, with an over representation of NC "mafia." Old CEO had vision, was the last of the old guard to cash in chips and leave. Now the CEO's some guy from Delta who'll help cut costs, lay off folks and generally lift share price at the expense of everything else.

Pros

You want to work on Open Source, you want to work on open source in the Boston Area, you would rather not be managed on a microscale (Red Hat promotes effective anarchy amongst developers, its like 80% time vs. Google's 20%). If you are able to push through ideas, even the most junior people can be involved in high level decisions, but upsets from upper management and defocuses are to be expected.

Cons

Low pay, chaotic execs harvested from the old-school dinosaur Unix companies that RH buried (think, DEC). We used to call the engineering org "DECHat", vacation time is frequently required to "make quarterly earning projections", and management is overly focused on stock price.

Pros

I love the fact that even though we are a publicly traded, for profit company, we do pretty much all of our software development in and for the Free/Open Source community. We contribute everything back to the community. Everyone benefits. Even our "competitors" have access to our work, but that's not the point. We spread our wealth to the rest of the world so that even the least wealthy parts of the world have access to the latest technology. We have contributed to numerous projects like One Laptop per Child at a loss just so that we can be good citizens. I am not just allowed but encouraged to do community work like presentations, papers and documentation. I love it here.

Cons

We are so over-tasked. Every day feels like drinking from a fire hose, and it seems that every time I ask another team about their timelines or projects I hear that they are short handed.
