My experience has been very positive

Pros

Some of the best people I've ever worked with. Everyone's friendly, welcoming, and helpful, both those within my department and those I interact with from other departments in my building and around campus. I get to interact with faculty, staff, researchers, grad students, and undergraduates, and I enjoy my work. The benefits package is generous, too, and it's nice to get a week off for winter recess.

Cons

In my case, it's the commute--I live about an hour outside of Houston, which means spending a lot of my time in the car. Other than that, I honestly can't think of much--and my supervisors are very accommodating, so I have a schedule that lets me avoid the worst rush-hour traffic.

Pros

Rice has a great atmosphere for graduate students, and a lot of emphasis is put on student success rather than "weeding out". There are a lot of things to get involved in, and a lot of support for students here.

Cons

Rice is an excellent research school (I'm in the natural sciences) and so you're going to spend a lot of time on research. That should be true anywhere, but you have to stay on top of things to stay competitive at Rice.
