Pros

Exciting and evolving workplace Getting to touch flight hardware Fair compensation before considering hours worked.

Cons

Bad management. Believes in contracting out all IT work, does not value in house teams. All changes or design must go through NZ and this lack of trust of resources leads to a difficult environment. Claims to be progressive but shows no policy towards flex work or hybrid. Average 60+ hours a week with little to no recognition from management. Overworked, undervalued

Pros

Very unique place to work, lots of design freedom with development projects. Get to experience everything from design, test and manufacture. The people are great and everyone loves what they do. No one there won’t go above and beyond to get the job done. High exposure to all things rockets, short development timelines and very hands on. It’s a great place to work but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. I’d recommend the place but only if you knew what you were getting into.

Cons

Very large disparity between US based and NZ based engineers, I’m talking over double what the NZ engineers are getting paid for the same position. Technicians get paid overtime but engineers don’t yet there’s a culture where everyone works 10+ hours a day to get the job done. High expectations make set backs all the more stressful and you are often given tasks you’re not qualified for to fill the resource gaps. The career grading matrix makes it seem like personal development is a priority but when performance reviews come round it’s mostly a box ticking session and if you don’t have all the points you don’t go up. They are also annual so join at the wrong time and you’re doing an extra year without the promotion. Overall the cons make it difficult to want to stay here long term unless you have been awarded heaps of stock to stick around.

Pros

Endless possibilities. If you’re interested in working on something nobody will stop you you. Everyone on the production engineering teams in Long Beach are really top notch, and most of us are very passionate about what we do. I was surprised to see the negative reviews on GD, which prompted me to write this, as I feel they completely do a disservice to the actual company culture. Most negative reviews seem to be about working more than 40 hours / week. Not going to lie, we work a lot, but nothing insane and no one is forcing us to do it, we just enjoy the work. Management teams in manufacturing and Archimedes teams are all very technically competent and actually contribute to engineering challenges. Compensation is competitive with other actual companies, and stocks are actually liquid (we can sell them for a defined price whenever we want).

Cons

The people and culture team is out of touch at times. This recent round of performance reviews was embarrassingly bad. The process took nearly 6 months, and the managers appeared to be kept completely in the dark. Also, for high performance teams, like the ones on the floor in Long Beach, it is frustrating to see new job reqs coming out for Space Systems engineers getting paid in a higher bracket. Also, now that pay information is transparent, it doesn’t seem fair that engineers who have been with the company for years would in some cases literally be better off quitting, then reapplying for the same position. Just make the adjustments and get on with it.
