Great people, but who's in charge?

Pros

The best thing about working at Rocket is the quality of your peers... smart people in every position. There is a lot of opportunity to do amazing work, as long as you are self-directed and can figure it out on your own. If you can manage your own workload, and find time to do other cool stuff, there is an opportunity to create and grow. If you need direction, this might not be the place for you. Excellent enticements to join, including 100% paid health insurance, generous vacation and time off policies, and matching 401K.

Cons

Exciting place to be, when you first join. After the initial honeymoon phase, the recognition and visibility just goes POOF. No one seems to be helping employees develop a career path, and it's easy to get overlooked. Raises? Don't hold your breath. Three HR plans in three years... where are we going, Rocket? Help us out here. Rocket attracts good talent, but does not work hard enough to retain the same employees. Professional development budgets are zero or very small, and conferences and training are handed out on a "it's who you know" basis. Management changes are like a revolving door at Rocket. Culture is still being defined, rapid growth is not handled well.

No career here, move along.

Pros

Wonderfully passionate people. Very good medical benefits. Very well appointed office spaces.

Cons

This is a stepping stone job. The culture here, communicated mainly via executives and supported by HR, is that you as an individual do NOT have anything to contribute to Rocket. The gift of your paycheck is to shut-up and do as you are told. Ideas are not welcome here. There are no product maps... no strategic plans... no aspirational goals. There is nothing on paper that employees can look to in Rocket's future to make them invest in themselves or in their own career.

Clueless technology executives

Pros

Benefits are better than competitive and people are fun to work with. Offices are nicely designed and comfortable with a variety of "environments" to do work in.

Cons

The executive team has no expertise in managing software development. It's ironic, since all have some amount of Fortune 500 tech company pedigree... particularly IBM. If that culture suits you, you'll do well. If you come from HP, EMC, Cisco, then beware. You will not fit in. New projects are simple rehashes of old ones. There is NO outside-the-box thinking here. Most products are 3-4 revisions behind their competition. Some product divisions are intentionally operated at a loss. These are not loss leaders, btw. There is no strategy on resource or technology sharing, resulting in lots of redundant efforts. A lack of coordination on initiatives involving multiple teams often results in delays or postponements on feature rollouts. The culture does not promote creativity, engineering quality, or applying best practices. Performance reviews are new to Rocket, so don't expect much there. The company has also never done an employee satisfaction survey.
