Pros

The compensation and health benefits were good compared to other companies in Boston The cafeteria was good and resonably priced

Cons

When I first started working at Ropes 6 years earlier it was an amazing place to work - people were friendly, professional and generally happy. Then there was changes to upper management with a new CEO who promoted a few internal staff that literally made the place a nightmare to work at. People were afraid of coming into work each day with the fear of being let go, and any small mistakes that were made led to people blaming eachother and just turned plain nasty. One chief at the company should never have been promoted as she has the worst people and managment skills that I have EVER witnessed. She is rude, unprofessional and down right mean and she does not know how to motivate staff in a positive way she belives that fear will movtivate employees to do what she wants. They kept adding layers and layers of middle management and implemented new policies and procedures to make the simpliest tasks incredible difficult to complete. There is no regard for work-life balance or professional development opportunities for staff - that department was eliminated. The lying and sneaky behaviors from upper managment was not only ruining my professional life but also negetively impacting me personally and I knew that it was time to leave regardless of the state of the economy.

Pros

I enjoyed working in my department when work was the priority and plentiful. I enjoyed felling a sense of accomplishment when I could complete tasks that were assigned to me. The people at Ropes are dedicated to working late if required to get the job done. There are some very dedicated workers in the Silicon Valley office. I very much appreciated support from the word processing department who were stellar at assisting with various tasks.

Cons

Management is AWFUL!! Cutthroat law firm with no regard for non legal staff. The East Palo Alto office AKA Silicon Valley office has laid off several people in a deplorable fashion. This firm actually believes that you can plan your sickness, if you use a sick day that you are entitled to without scheduling it in advance, you are docked. The review process is a joke management tends to bring up thing that happened several years ago to get ammunition on you so that you can be terminated. Sneaky low life law firm. I have never worked for a firm before where partners will not speak up to defend workers and where HR and management have the power to cut a persons position without any concern for anyone accept themselves. The management always come up with tasks to keep themselves busy for fear of loosing their own jobs. Morale in this firm SUCKS!
