Pros

Teaching assistant/graduate assistant are considered as state employees, and hence get pretty good benefits such as great health insurance with low premium.

Cons

The university keeps cutting budgets on teaching/graduate assistantship. More and more graduate students are losing their financial support.

Pros

Close to NYC. They provide great health benefits for TA/GAs. The community is very ethnically diverse and welcoming to international students. Many departments are pretty decent if not great for graduate studies. However, it all depends on the professor you work with and the vibrancy of the lab. Lots of things to do in weekends- pretty decent bars and pubs. There are a couple of theaters and playhouses too.

Cons

New Brunswick is not a very safe city. Certain parts can be dangerous at night.
