Started out really well...

Pros

Of course, the site is wonderful itself, with a lot benefits. It is great to be able to go and play sports at lunch time (pre-COVID days). Most people are really nice and I made good friends.

Cons

Biggest problem, which I was shocked to see at such a well-regarded company: There is a lack of standards in how people managers lead their teams. Some managers are really professional, others are very unprofessional and there is no incentive for managers to do their job well. I have heard from many employees too. Sadly, for a long time, there was a pretty negative attitude towards "Employee Resource Groups" by managers I encountered, even though pretty much all major corporations have them. This started to change in 2019, but for all years prior, the attitude towards starting an ERG was surprisingly negative. All that being said, there are some very happy employees on specific teams. Also, promotions are insanely hard because of low turnover (which is both bad and good, because it means people stay put). According to one of my ex-managers, it is not possible to transfer at all times to a new position within the company if your interests change.

Best of breed products, poor leadership

Pros

Best of breed products and solutions, good benefits, excellent work/life balance, opportunities to move around within the company to continue learning and broadening your experience

Cons

This company helped create Business Analytics; they were among the first to do it and the products are still the best available, but the leadership is failing. They don't have a vision for how to grow and adapt to what is now a highly competitive market. Because SAS is still privately owned, it is still run by one person who makes all major decisions. Therefore, it's difficult for outsiders to come into the company and try to implement the changes that SAS needs to stay competitive. As a result, they only promote to top management positions from within, so no fresh thinking. With our best of breed products, we should be growing at least 15% a year, but we're not. Also, salaries are NOT competitive, SAS used to be able to pay below market rate because our excellent benefits were extraordinary, but they no longer are; a lot of companies offer the same benefits.

Pros

Flexible work hours Wonderful people to work with

Cons

Below average compensation for young professionals. I'm not sure why HR would think any young professional would care about day care and on site services as a reason to stay. Pay at least according to the market average and keep the talent.
