Not as "Great" as they say

Pros

Yes, great benefits, most people get their own four wall office. If you are at the headquarters in Cary, NC then you get extra benefits of a multi-building gym & pool.

Cons

Just like any large organization (about 13,000 worldwide & 5000 in Cary) their are a lot of internal politics. There is a lot of good ole boy & girl networks that if you are not a part of you can forget about getting into management. Even if you do get into mgmt many people whom are/were managers say it's not hardly worth it. There is not much more pay for being a manager yet your duties are significantly increased. Many times managers have people making more than them doing less work. Interesting. You can really get stuck in a corner there, although they do allow internal job movement. The lack of organized, planned out product development is amazing. They have been struggling with the "silos of development" for many years. It is very hard, even as an employee, to get up to speed on new product details, especially lower level technical details. Owner is making billions while senior technical people (especially outside of R&D) struggle to get to $100k. As typical in large org.s the nepotism has paid off for some though. The chosen ones.

Legacy Company Treats Employees Fair and Customers not so Fair

Pros

SAS is famous for the perks it offers employee--its main claim to fame. Its software is (and becoming less so) indispensable to corporations worldwide. Rather than taking all of the profits, Goodnight has invested large sums of money back into the company which is why it has $3.1 Billion in sales in 2013. Until 2001/2002, new ideas were embraced. This is a company that has an enormous talent pool. Overall good for employees and not so good if you are a customer sustaining the cash flows into the company.

Cons

The rivers of cash and enormous talent pool are not that well harnessed in today's competitive environment. Goodnight has no shareholders or board of directors to help guide the company. His decision making style is opaque, leaving many to divine his intent. Executive management are mainly long-tenured employees whose outside perspective has dimmed over time. Only one corporate officer from a Fortune 500 company has held a position in the company and that was less than 2 years. Read as this is a very insular company. Customers are to be milked and alliance partners are to be used as stop-gaps until R&D can build a competing product.

Pros

Still makes some effort at work life balance. Now recognizes that remote work is possible.

Cons

Benefits are fading and pay now lags far behind any legit competition. New policies are resulting in systemic ageism, whether intended or not. Pretends that it does Agile and CI/CD, but actually just pays lip service to the ideas. (No, that doesn't mean we do "waterfall", it means we muddle along with little useful guidance from mgmt.) Staffing in QA has dropped precipitously due to the latest wave of early retirement offers, and the products are suffering.
