My experience with SDS was hands off since the position worked geographically separate from SDS leadership. Contractors were embedded within DoD organizations to provide assistance for some of the task normally handled by military personnel. Loved doing basically what I did in the military but as a civilian.
Cons
Medical could be better and salary could be a bit better as well to make it competitive with other contractors in the local area.
